Season 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9… Question: can you do the Carlton dance? I think that over time, you see what he's struggling with and you see him grow and I think that the emotional catharsis from Carlton's character is that growth throughout the season and for future seasons. And so I don't think you're supposed to like him off the bat. I don't think you're supposed to like him off the bat." He's a kid! He's irrational but at the end of the day, he is a 16-year-old boy. I talked about the weight of the universe, like, all of these things are weighing on him and so he doesn't make the best decisions. And, you know, the pressures of being the only son of a very hyper successful Black man in a white world. He's a 16-year-old kid dealing with anxiety, dealing with this sort of his inability to connect with his own Blackness. I think they definitely hated the character, right? I'm sure there were a lot of people that were like, "I just don't like this direction at all." But Carlton isn't a character that you are supposed to fall in love with from the get-go because you know, we come into the story at a point in his life that's really tumultuous. I'd say it was easier in the sense that I wasn't in between takes like, "Okay, how does Alfonso ?" you know, like, in that sense, but it was definitely a challenge from the get-go for me to separate myself from from that version of the character.īecause I have seen people say something along the lines of "I can't let Alfonso's Carlton go like, what is this? What is happening?" But it starts from Morgan and the producers and everyone on the show, just sort of giving me the freedom to go forth and do what you do, bring yourself to this role. Do you think it was easier that your character was so different from the original Carlton? I remember every single day on set he'd be like, "Hey, you deserve to be here. I think each and every single one of us in the cast, at some point, whether it was before we started filming, or while we're filming, we made the decision that I belong here, I deserve to be here, I've worked really hard to be here and so I'm gonna just go out there and do my job. In life, you can either choose to be scared by how big your dreams are, or you can rise to the occasion. But I think that I am a person that likes challenges. You know, there was definitely the pressure. He is one of the most beloved characters in the history of television, right? And then, especially when I read the script, and I was like, "Oh, wow, this is the direction that they're taking Carlton. Yeah, that's still heavy, because I mean, look, Alfonso did his thing with this character. Jabari felt the weight of the whole universe on his shoulders but I'd say I felt the weight of, like, the solid solar system. Did you feel that same pressure coming into the role?Ībsolutely. Sky Obviously, all eyes were on Jabari when he took over the Fresh Prince mantle but the other characters were so loved. To hear that and to be reminded of the shoulders that we're standing on is just a really special, bubbly feeling. Every other week, I hear another story someone in Brazil, someone in Portugal, someone in China is like this was the only American show that was dubbed in my language that I got to watch. That show was so unbelievably iconic and impactful to so many people around the globe. Well, I mean, that's just one of the biggest honours in the history of existence. How does it feel to be part of the Fresh Prince Reboot? In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, Olly deep dives into the reasons behind Carlton's toxicity, the pressures of code-switching and why Carlton is the real fresh prince of Bel-Air. However as the season first draws to a close we begin to see a less cutting side of modern Carlton. Viewers were quick to label him the 'supervillain' of the Bel-Airdramatised reboot though, an easy presumption to make given his initial hostility towards Will and his penchant for drug taking. It's pretty safe to say that Olly Sholotan's Carlton took a huge departure from the loveable, dorky version fans adore from the '90s Fresh Prince of Bel-Air sitcom.
